Owego Apalachin CSD Families,
In light of recent events and an uptick in threats impacting schools via social media and other platforms, both nationally and locally, I would like to share an important message developed in collaboration with BOCES and our neighboring school districts.
We want to assure you that we take all reports seriously and follow established safety protocols. Threats—whether intended as pranks, jokes, or more serious—can pose significant risks and have serious consequences for our entire community.
Understanding the Impact of Threats
Consequences of Threats: Threats made as pranks create unnecessary fear, disrupt the learning environment, and divert vital resources from law enforcement and school personnel. It is important to understand that making threats against a school is a crime. This includes threats made directly, implied, or shared through reposting.
Legal and Criminal Consequences: Students who make or share threats may face serious legal repercussions, including arrest, criminal prosecution, and a permanent record that could affect future opportunities. Our district’s Code of Conduct stipulates disciplinary actions, which may include suspension or expulsion.
The Role of Parents and Caregivers
We urge you to discuss the seriousness of this issue with your children. Even vague or joking threats can have far-reaching implications. Please monitor your child’s social media use and encourage them to report concerning content to a trusted adult or school staff member, rather than sharing or reposting it. Forwarding or reposting a threat can still result in accountability under the law and school policies.
Reporting Concerns
If you or your child observes or hears something concerning—whether online or in person—please report it immediately to a school official or law enforcement. Prompt reporting can help prevent potential incidents and ensure the safety of our schools. Remember, when concerns or threats are circulated instead of reported directly, it complicates our ability to respond effectively.
Collaborating for a Safer Community
Through awareness, education, and open communication, we can work together to prevent these situations and ensure our schools remain safe spaces for learning. Thank you for your partnership in reinforcing the importance of responsible behavior, both online and offline.
We will continue to keep you informed. If you have questions or need additional resources on discussing these issues with your child, please feel free to contact your school administration or counselor.
Sincerely,
Dr. Corey Green
Superintendent of Schools
