The Owego Apalachin Central School District, in partnership with the Tioga Arts Council, is excited to announce the opening of Ascension: A Student Skateboard Art Exhibition. The event will take place on Friday, March 7, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, as part of an Art Crawl through downtown Owego, NY, featuring the original skateboard art created by the students of Owego Free Academy.
The exhibition will begin with an Opening Night Reception at Tioga Arts Council, located at 179 Front Street, and will span several local venues including Owego Home (173 Front Street), Experience Tioga (200-204 Front Street), and Lucky Hare (17 Lake Street). The public is invited to explore this unique showcase of student creativity and immerse themselves in an evening of art, culture, and community.
Ascension highlights the culmination of a weeklong residency with renowned artist and entrepreneur Mark Rivard, the founder of Do Rad Things. Rivard, who has more than 20 years of experience in the art and skateboarding world, will work closely with over 150 students from Owego Apalachin Middle School and Owego Free Academy. Students will design and create their original artworks on skateboard decks, delving into themes of pop culture, youth expression, and the intersection of art and entrepreneurship.
The residency, supported by the Floyd Hooker Foundation and Cloudcroft Studios, provides students with an immersive learning experience that focuses on the creative process, marketing, exhibition curation, and entrepreneurship – all through the lens of visual art. In this hands-on project, students not only create stunning art but also gain valuable insights into the business of being an artist.
