The top 8 Drone Soccer teams in our region competed for a chance to earn a trip to Utica on March 2nd to compete in the Drone Soccer State championships at SUNY Polytech.
The coed teams composed of five pilots each, battled in Corning from 8 am - 4 pm on Saturday with the top four schools moving on to States. Games were decided in best of three sets in this double elimination tournament.
Owego beat Bath 18-17 in set three of the Championship game to win the tournament and became the first team to be crowned District 2 Drone Soccer Regional Champions.
Owego’s pilots for the final game were senior captain Evan Wasielewski (Def/Goalie), Freshman Scott Reigle (Striker), Junior Ephraim Doty (Def), Junior Caleb Carvellas (Forward), and 7th grader Sarah Heath (Def/Goalie).
In tournament play Owego advanced easily through the bracket winning games in 2 sets against: Spencer Van-Etten; Watkins Glenn; and Bath-Hammondsport. The River Hawks stumbled, due to a striker drone malfunction, in a rematch against Bath losing in two sets. However, in an exhilarating championship match for first place, Owego beat Bath in three sets with an 18-17 nail-biter win in set 3.
Rounding out the River Hawks roster for the tournament were junior Luke Saunders, sophomores Liam Bell, Levi Saunders, Cadon Wasielewski, and freshman Landon Boccasini.
